COMMISSIONING
Commissioning furniture is not difficult and Andrew aims to make it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for his clients. To begin with, the purpose, dimensions and preferred woods are discussed, together with any special features the furniture should have. Images on his website or from his extensive portfolio can often be a helpful to an enquirer by showing design solutions from previous commissions or elements which may be incorporated into the proposed new work.
This information enables Andrew to provide an accurate guide, based on his many years' experience, to the likely cost of the work. If this figure falls within the client´s budget and he or she decides to take their enquiry further, Andrew will then prepare a design in the form of scale drawings, perspective views and in some cases scale models, along with a firm quotation. At this stage any alterations to the design can be made, if necessary. If the client then decides not to go ahead, a design fee of £ 75.00 will be charged, but this will be waived if the commission goes ahead. A site visit is often advantageous, and any travelling costs this would incur will be made clear at the outset.
The copyright of all Andrew´s work is reserved and his designs may not be taken and made elsewhere without his consent even if a design fee has been charged.
Once a client is happy with the proposals, a 25% deposit of the total cost is requested, the materials chosen and the project slotted into the workshop schedule. Andrew aims to complete commissions within six months of an order being placed but specific deadlines such as a wedding can usually be met.
At a suitable stage the client is invited along to the workshop to see how the project is taking shape; not only does this help the client feel more involved in the process but enables any outstanding decisions, such as the choice of handles or other detailing, to be made. On completion of the work, arrangements are made for delivery and installation, when payment of the balance of the cost is due. On some large schemes, stage payments, agreed in advance, are made as the project move forwards.
