Andrew Lawton is a Member of the Chartered Society of Designers and is a fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. He trained as a designer craftsman and has been running his own workshop since 1980, creating fine furniture for private homes, businesses and public buildings. Although tried and tested traditional cabinet making techniques are used, his work reaches out beyond merely reproducing ideas and styles of the past, without self-consciously striving for novelty. The scope of the workshop ranges from a single piece such as a stool to complete room plans; enquiries are invited for any item or project which requires individual and distinctive handling.

Timber from well managed sources, often locally grown, is used wherever possible, including English walnut, cherry and yew. As part of Andrew's concern for the planet the purpose-built workshop is possibly unique in England in that it is heated and powered by electricity generated from renewable resources. Andrew is a recipient of two Guild Marks from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers [awarded for excellence of design, materials and craftsmanship]. Away from his own workshop, Andrew has taught at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, Maine, USA, and assisted Alan Peters OBE for two short periods. His work appears in several books, including the definitive 'Furniture for the 21st. Century' by Betty Norbury. Notable exhibitions have included 'A Celebration of Craftsmanship' at Cheltenham, 'Design on Environment', Banqueting House, London and 'Designer Crafts 2001', Mall Galleries, London. Andrew's work has twice been shortlisted for the Wood Awards.
